A person was seriously injured and flown to the hospital after being found inside a burning vehicle at the Walmart in Johnsburg early Sunday morning.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 4:37 a.m. Sunday to the Walmart, 3801 Running Brook Farm in Johnsburg, for a report of a car fire.

Police arrived on the scene to find a black sedan on fire and reported the flames were intensifying.

Firefighters arrived on the scene within five minutes and found the car heavily involved in flames, according to Battalion Chief David Harwood.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and located a person inside the vehicle.

The victim was removed from the car and lifesaving measures were started, Harwood said.

An ambulance transported the victim to the LifeNet helipad at Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry.

The ambulance transferred the victim to an awaiting LifeNet medical helicopter.

Harwood said the helicopter then flew the person to Loyola University Medical Center Center in Maywood with serious injuries.

Fire investigators were called to the scene and the cause of the fire is not known yet.

The incident remains under investigation by the McHenry Township Fire Protection District.
