A Waukegan man suffered serious injuries after he led police on a chase before crashing head-on into another vehicle, occupied by a family, in Indiana near the Illinois border.

The Lake County, Indiana Sheriff’s Office began chasing a sedan around 2:10 p.m. Friday for traffic violations.

The sedan failed to stop and the pursuit traveled northbound on Interstate 65 before continuing westbound onto the Indiana Toll Road toward Illinois.

Officers attempted to perform a maneuver to stop the vehicle just before the state line but it was able to get away, according to Lake County, Indiana Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.

The suspect drove the wrong way on the Indiana Toll Road and struck another car, which was traveling eastbound, head-on.

The other car was occupied by a family of four, Martinez said. They were transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

The suspect, a 20-year-old Waukegan man, was transported to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries, Martinez said.

All eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road were shut down for several hours for an investigation.

The suspect, who was driving a stolen vehicle out of Chicago, had previously fled from the Hobart, Indiana Police Department.

No charges have been announced yet and the investigation remains ongoing.
