A 9-year-old boy who was in critical condition after an apparent accidental hanging in Waukegan last week died from his injuries over the weekend.
The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 4:20 p.m. on February 13 to the Beechwood at the Preserve Apartments in the 3000 block of 8th Street in Waukegan for an injured person call.
A 911 caller reported a young boy was found hanging in an apartment.
A medical examiner report said the 9-year-old boy was found hanging from his bunk bed by shoelaces.
The boy was cut down and was reported to be not conscious and not breathing at the scene.
Paramedics arrived and transported the child to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
The child was transferred from Condell to Children’s Wisconsin Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that same day.
On Sunday, the boy died in the hospital and the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified and conducted an external examination.
The medical examiner’s office identified him as Jeremiah McMillon. He resided at the apartment where the incident occurred.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain called the incident “tragic” and said last week his department was investigating.
A preliminary investigation showed there did not appear to be any signs of foul play, Chastain said.
The medical examiner’s report said the preliminary manner of death was an accident but the incident is still under investigation.
