Numerous vehicle crashes were reported, including some involving fire department vehicles, after snow caused slick roadways across Lake and McHenry counties Friday evening.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a hazardous weather outlook early Friday morning warning about a wintry mix of rain and snow.

Forecasters said a strong cold front surged south across the area Friday afternoon, bringing an abrupt end to the mild weather.

Rain developed behind the front and quickly changed to snow as temperatures plummeted, the NWS said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said around 10:15 p.m. Friday that their 911 center had fielded numerous calls about slick roadways all over the county.

Multiple vehicles had gone off the roadway and into ditches or were involved in crashes with other vehicles.

The sheriff’s office urged motorists to use extreme caution if they had to travel on the roadways.

Salt trucks were out and “doing their best to get the roads salted,” the sheriff’s office said.

The Gurnee Fire Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene of a vehicle crash with injuries at Stearns School Road and Hutchins Road in Old Mill Creek just before 9 p.m.

A Gurnee fire engine crew reported their vehicle had been struck by a car while they were standing by at the scene. No injuries were reported.

On the opposite side of Gurnee around the same time, a two-vehicle crash left heavy damage to both vehicles at Route 21 and Merit Club Lane. Three ambulances were dispatched to transport victims to the hospital.

In Beach Park, a car crashed into a pole and tree and brought power lines down near 33rd Street and McAree Road. ComEd was called to the scene.

A Spring Grove Fire Protection District ambulance around 9:05 p.m. reported they had been involved in a crash on Route 12 west of Wilmot Road in Spring Grove.

Three additional ambulances were dispatched to the scene and two fire department members were transported to the hospital.

The McHenry Police Department issued an alert to residents urging motorists to use caution while traveling, saying that many roadways were slick due to the weather.
