A woman was able to escape from her vehicle after she drove into Lake Michigan in Waukegan and her car became fully submerged in the water Saturday evening.
The Waukegan Police Department responded around 11:16 p.m. Saturday to the 600 block of Market Street for a report of an unknown problem.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said officers encountered an 18-year-old Gurnee woman.
The woman reported that she had driven her car into Lake Michigan but crawled out through an open window and made it to shore.
She made statements about not wanting to live anymore and intentionally driving the car into the lake, Chastain said.
A blue 2008 Honda Civic was fully submerged in the water.
Waukegan Fire Marshal Todd Zupec said the car was along the shore of Lake Michigan.
Waukegan Fire Department divers were deployed into the water to search the car and ensure it was unoccupied, Zupec said.
The driver was transported to an area hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, Chastain said.
Fire department divers returned Sunday morning with recovery crews to remove the vehicle from the water.
