Two families were displaced after a car caught fire and quickly spread to a row of townhomes in Vernon Hills Monday evening, fire officials said.

The Countryside Fire Protection District responded around 9 p.m. Monday to the 300 block of Birchwood Court in Vernon Hills for a car fire.

Countryside Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Russ Bach said crews arrived to find an active car fire outside of a two-story townhouse.

The fire was extending into the garage and up the outside of the building.

The Vernon Hills Police Department assisted in making sure all occupants were out of the residences, Bach said.

Fire crews worked quickly to extinguish the flames and checked for extension.

Two families were displaced due to fire and smoke damage, Bach said.

The American Red Cross is assisting one of the two families with housing arrangements.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Bach said. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

The Countryside Fire Protection District was assisted by the Mundelein, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, Highland Park and Barrington-Countryside fire departments.
