A 24-year-old woman has died in the hospital after she and a man, who also died, were shot while walking on the sidewalk in Waukegan Saturday afternoon.

The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 4:20 p.m. Saturday to the 400 block of Powell Avenue in Waukegan for a shooting.

Officers arrived and found two victims who had been shot, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain.

A 28-year-old Waukegan man, who was reported to be shot in the head, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. An autopsy was conducted but his identity has not been released yet.

The second victim, a 24-year-old woman, was shot multiple times, Chastain said. She was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The woman was listed in critical condition and died on Tuesday from her injuries, the coroner’s office said.

An autopsy is being scheduled and her identity is being withheld temporarily.

The Waukegan Police Department Major Crime Scene Unit, Community Crimes Division and Criminal Investigations Division responded to the shooting scene.

Investigators were on the scene for several hours and officers shut down Powell Avenue.

Shell casings were seen marked by numerous evidence markers on the street and grass along Powell Avenue just south of Forest Avenue.

As of Monday, no suspects were in custody but “all leads are being investigated,” Chastain said.
