The coroner has released the identity of a 53-year-old man who died after he was repeatedly stabbed by a woman at an apartment in Mundelein Monday morning.
An autopsy performed Tuesday showed Michael Murphy, 53, of Mundelein, died as a result of multiple sharp force injuries, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
Theย Mundelein Police Department and Mundelein Fire Department responded around 5:10 a.m. Monday to the Park Butterfield Apartments in the 1400 block of Downing Place.
Mundelein Police Chief Jason Seeley said a 911 caller requested police assistance for an unknown problem inside the building.
Officers located an unconscious man, later identified as Murphy, inside an apartment unit. He was bleeding from the upper torso.
Officers attempted to speak with a woman, believed to be the 911 caller, but she was incoherent and uncooperative, Seeley said.
Paramedics arrived and began performing CPR on Murphy.
Ambulances transported both Murphy and the woman to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Murphy died shortly after arriving at the hospital, Seeley said.
Seeley said it became apparent that there had been an altercation that led to the man’s injuries.
Hospital staff indicated Murphy had suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest and neck area.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the hospital.
The 44-year-old woman was being treated at the hospital and is considered a suspect in the investigation, Seeley said. Her injuries were non-life-threatening.
Police records showed previous reports of domestic-related calls between the two individuals.
The Mundelein Police Department said they are working with the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, the Lake County Coronerโs Office and the Lake County Stateโs Attorneyโs Office as part of the investigation.
Seeley said investigators believe this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing danger to the public.
