Police arrested a driver after a road rage incident ended in the parking lot of a middle school in Wauconda, delaying student dismissal Thursday afternoon.

The Wauconda Police Department responded around 3 p.m. Thursday to the Wauconda Middle School, 215 Slocum Lake Road in Wauconda, for a report of a traffic altercation.

Wauconda Police Department Sgt. Christopher Gallivan said the road rage incident began at Brown Street and Slocum Lake Road.

The incident ended in the parking lot of the school and officers arrived quickly.

Gallivan said the school did not go into lockdown but briefly delayed students’ dismissal for the day while police investigated.

Officers took a male suspect into custody and students were then released.

A report that the suspect was armed with a gun was unfounded and it is believed the suspect only gestured with his fingers in the shape of a gun, Gallivan said.

No injuries were reported during the road rage incident and charges are pending against the man, Gallivan said.

He is expected to be charged with disorderly conduct but additional charges are possible pending the investigation.
