The sheriff’s office is investigating after a gunman fired several shots during an altercation that turned into a physical fight in a parking lot in Beach Park Wednesday morning.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:05 a.m. Wednesday to a parking lot in the 37800 block of North Sheridan Road in Beach Park for a report of shots fired.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived but did not locate any victims injured, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

Deputies searched the area and located four shell casings that appeared to have been recently discharged from a firearm.

Deputies also located several items strewn about in the area, indicating some type of physical altercation occurred, Covelli said.

Video surveillance from a nearby establishment was reviewed and it showed two women exiting a vehicle in the parking lot.

The two engaged in a verbal altercation with a woman who exited a Nissan Altima.

Covelli said the verbal altercation turned into a physical fight.

A man then exited the Nissan while armed with a firearm before shooting the gun four times.

It is believed the man fired the shots into the air, Covelli said. All of the people involved fled from the scene after the shots were fired.

Sheriff’s deputies collected evidence at the scene and the incident remains under investigation.
