A section of Route 23 through Marengo will soon be shut down for the next six months as crews work to replace a culvert, resulting in a lengthy detour route through Woodstock.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) said a culvert replacement project will take place on Route 23, also known as State Street, just north of Route 176 in Marengo.

The project will begin, weather permitting, next week, according to IDOT. The culvert is located on Route 23 between 1st Avenue and 2nd Avenue.

The $1.2 million project will require closing Route 23 between Route 176 and Second Avenue.

A detour will direct motorists to Route 176, Route 47 and Route 14. The detour route is nearly 25 miles long.

Access to residences and businesses will be maintained throughout construction, IDOT said.

The work is expected to be completed in late September.
