Firefighters used foam and 2,000 gallons of water to extinguish a “burdensome” machinery fire at a metal recycling center in Woodstock Saturday afternoon.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded at 12:15 p.m. Saturday to Behr Iron & Metal, 13914 Washington Street in Woodstock, for a report of a crane on fire.

Firefighters arrived at the metal recycling center within five minutes and found a large piece of machinery on fire in the parking lot, Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Communication Specialist Alex Vucha said.

“The nearest building was 50 feet from the fire and did not pose any immediate exposure concerns,” Vucha said.

Crews used firefighting foam and around 2,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire, which was primarily fueled by various flammable liquids.

Vucha called the fire “burdensome.”

The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes and no one was injured.

Vucha said that firefighting foam is used when water alone is determined to be ineffective.

“When flammable liquids are present, the foam creates a physical blanket or barrier that starves the fire of oxygen,” Vucha said.

“This helps firefighters gain control of fire and effectively prevents it from spreading,” Vucha added.

The fire remains under investigation by the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District.
