Police say charges are possible against a Waukegan man who accidentally shot himself while handling a gun at an apartment in Waukegan.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 2:10 a.m. Monday to the Emhurst Lake Apartments in the 1000 block of Lakehurst Drive for a report of a person shot.

The fire department staged nearby and officers went into the scene to ensure it was safe for paramedics to enter.

Officers found a 45-year-old Waukegan man who was suffering a single gunshot wound, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain.

The man suffered the wound to his right hip area, Chastain said. The man reported the injury was accidental while handling a gun.
