A winter weather advisory is in effect for McHenry County and other northern Illinois counties as forecasters warn about rain switching to accumulating snow Tuesday into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter weather advisory late Tuesday afternoon for the northern Illinois area.

The advisory includes McHenry, Boone, Winnebago, Ogle, Lee and DeKalb counties.

The advisory said snow is expected with total accumulations of two to four inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph are also possible.

The advisory went into effect at 4 p.m. and will expire at 12 p.m. Wednesday.

Motorists are urged to plan for slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening and morning commutes.

The initial rain late Tuesday afternoon is expected to switch to a quick period of heavy and wet snow with poor visibility.

Snow may accumulate between one and two inches before ending in the 7-8 p.m. time frame.

Another round of snow is expected after midnight through late morning Wednesday which may bring another one to three inches of accumulation.

A flood warning was also issued by the NWS for the Fox River affecting Kane, Lake and McHenry counties.

“A Flood Warning means water levels above flood stage are imminent or may already be occurring. Persons along rivers and streams in the warned area should take immediate precautions to protect life and property,” the warning said.

The stage was 8.7 feet at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The flood stage is 9.5 feet.

“The river may rise above flood stage tomorrow morning and continue a slow climb through the remainder of the week to near 10.5 feet by early next week,” the warning said.
