Firefighters rescued a woman who was seriously injured after becoming trapped inside a townhome fire that also left her husband injured near Deerfield Thursday evening.

The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District responded around 7:50 p.m. Thursday to the 600 block of Martin Lane in unincorporated Deerfield for a report of a structure fire.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Steve McCaughey said it was reported as a kitchen fire and one person was possibly trapped.

Emergency crews arrived at the two-story townhome to find smoke showing from the front door.

The incident was upgraded to a confirmed fire response to bring additional crews to the scene, McCaughey said.

Firefighters pulled a hose line and met a man at the front door who reported that his wife was still inside.

Crews encountered high heat and smoke conditions banked down to the floor, McCaughey said.

Firefighters entered the home and rescued the woman who was still inside the home. Both victims were transported to the hospital.

McCaughey said the woman suffered serious injuries and the man suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters advanced the hose line into the building and extinguished the fire.

Both adjacent townhomes were checked and had minor smoke damage.

The Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Lake Zurich, Deerfield, Wauconda, Northbrook, Highland Park and Long Grove fire departments assisted at the scene.

The MABAS Division 4 Fire Investigation Team and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire, McCaughey said.
