A woman was hospitalized after she was attacked during a domestic incident by a man who fled the scene in her car, which had their baby inside, in Libertyville Friday evening.
The Libertyville Police Department responded around 8:47 p.m. Friday to the area of Route 21 and Buckley Road for a report of a domestic battery.
Libertyville Deputy Police Chief Matt Goze said the battery occurred in and outside of a vehicle, which had been traveling on Buckley Road.
Bystanders called 911 to report they encountered a female victim who had been battered by a man.
The man fled the scene in a silver 2008 Ford Escape with a Wisconsin temporary registration plate, Goze said.
Officers arrived and were initially told that the victim’s vehicle had been stolen by the male offender and that the woman’s infant was in the vehicle.
An alert was broadcast to area police departments referring to the incident as a kidnapping and stolen vehicle.
The alert said the incident happened in front of the Holiday Inn Express and Suites, 77 West Buckley Road.
The Ford fled northbound on Milwaukee Avenue from Route 137.
Goze said officers learned the offender was the father of the infant, who was reported to be five months old.
The woman was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.
The vehicle and infant were recovered by the Waukegan Police Department near Washington Street and Keller Avenue in Waukegan.
A family member who was not involved in the incident assisted in the recovery, Goze said.
The infant did not appear to be injured but was transported to a local hospital for examination as a precautionary measure.
Goze said the offender fled the area and has not been located. Officials did not release the exact relationship between the man and woman involved.
The Libertyville Police Department is actively investigating the incident and no additional information was released.
