The coroner has identified a 23-year-old man who was killed in a two-vehicle crash that left one car rolled over and multiple people injured in unincorporated McHenry County.
The Union Fire Protection District, Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:57 p.m. on April 1 to South Union Road and East Coral Road in Coral Township, which is between Union and Marengo.
Emergency crews found a two-vehicle crash with multiple injuries and heavy damage.
The Union Police Department, Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, Huntley Fire Protection District and Hampshire Fire Protection District were also called to the scene.
A preliminary investigation showed that a 2000 Toyota Sienna was traveling westbound on East Coral Road, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Toyota Sienna failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection of South Union Road, the sheriff’s office said.
The Toyota Sienna was struck by a 2008 Toyota 4Runner, which was traveling northbound on South Union Road.
The intersection is a two-way stop and has no traffic controls for South Union Road.
The vehicles traveled to the northwest corner of the intersection and entered an open field following the impact.
Sheriff’s officials said the Toyota 4Runner rolled onto its side as the vehicles came to a final rest. A medical helicopter was requested to the scene but was later canceled.
A 23-year-old Marengo man, who was a passenger in one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene.
McHenry County Coroner Dr. Michael Rein said Monday that the victim was identified as Jesus Bonilla.
The coroner said Bonilla was a resident of Union but the sheriff’s office said he was a Marengo resident.
A 23-year-old passenger in the Toyota Sienna was transported to Northwestern Medicine in Huntley with life-threatening injuries, sheriff’s officials said.
The driver of the Toyota 4Runner, a 40-year-old Woodstock woman, and the driver of the Toyota Sienna, a 70-year-old Marengo man, were transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin with non-life-threatening injuries.
A 41-year-old Marengo man, who was also a passenger in the Toyota Sienna, was transported to Northwestern Medicine in Huntley with non-life-threatening injuries.
A guide wire to a utility pole was damaged in the crash, causing the pole to move and wires to sag low to the ground.
ComEd responded to the scene and a short power outage resulted while crews were repairing the damage, the sheriff’s officials said.
Airbags deployed in the crash and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The intersection was shut down for several hours while a crash investigation was conducted.
The investigation remains ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriffโs Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
