The Lake in the Hills Police Department announced the groundbreaking of their new police station will begin next week on the $26 million facility that will be double the size of the current station.
The Lake in the Hills Police Department said the new police department will be built near the current village hall, 600 Harvest Gate Drive, and will be located in the 2600 block of Village Hall Drive.
The official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. next Friday.
The police department said they anticipate some commercial truck activity in the area in the coming week nearing the groundbreaking date. The project will start with site clearing and grading.
“We are delighted to host our upcoming groundbreaking ceremony,” Lake in the Hills Police Chief Mary Frake said.
“This groundbreaking is more than a symbol of the start of construction. This marks a significant milestone in our community as well as towards the future of our police department,” Frank said.
The department said certain phases of construction may temporarily cause additional truck traffic, noise and dust. Updates will be posted on the village’s website.
The current police station is 30 years old and was originally designed as a combined village hall and police station in 1992. In 2002, the department expanded and took over the entire building after the new village hall was constructed.
Despite the department expanding to the entire building, the space was still insufficient to meet its needs, officials said.
Space needs studies were conducted in 2005 and 2019. In 2022, the village began moving towards the direction of a new police facility.
Officials said the new police facility will nearly double the operating space.
It will alleviate site and parking issues, improve holding facilities, expand evidence processing and storage space, provide better locker rooms for officers, expand officer workspaces and allow different divisions of the department to be more integrated.
The total project cost was determined to be just over $26,585,000. Construction is anticipated to be completed in 18 months.
