Steven T. Grimmitt, 59, of Woodstock.

A Woodstock man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after a jury convicted him of sexually abusing and assaulting two children in Kane County over the span of nearly two years.

Steven T. Grimmitt, 59, of Woodstock, was charged in February 2021 with six counts of predatory criminal sexual assault and 19 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Kane County Assistant Stateโ€™s Attorneys Matthew Rodgers and Jake Matekaitis said in court that Grimmitt sexually abused two victims between May 2012 and April 2014.

Grimmitt knew the two victims, who were younger than 13 years old at the time, the prosecutors said.

The incidents occurred in Pingree Grove and were investigated by the Pingree Grove Police Department and Kane County Child Advocacy Center.

A jury trial began in November and led to the jury returning guilty verdicts on three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a Class X felony, and 13 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child, a Class 2 felony.

A third victim testified during the trial about how Grimmitt abused her many years ago.

“My thanks to the victims for coming forward and seeing this case through. I am grateful they trusted us to seek justice on their behalf,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers said the third victim showed “remarkable strength” in testifying.

Grimmitt was free on a $225,000 bond since shortly after his arrest. His bond was revoked following his conviction.

Kane County Judge John Barsanti overruled the jury last month and found Grimmitt not guilty on one of the predatory criminal sexual assault counts and six of the aggravated criminal sexual abuse counts.

Last week, the judge sentenced Grimmitt on the remaining two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and seven counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Barsanti sentenced Grimmitt to a total of 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Grimmitt must serve at least 85% of the first 16 years of the sentence. He is eligible for day-for-day sentencing on the remaining four years of the sentence.

Grimmitt must also register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois Sexual Offender Registration Act.
