Officials say the Environmental Protection Agency is investigating after diesel fuel from an unknown source leaked into a pond next to a manufacturing plant in Buffalo Grove.

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded around 6:45 p.m. Thursday to Vapor Bus International, 1010 Johnson Drive in Buffalo Grove, for a report of a hazardous material incident.

Village of Buffalo Grove Communications and Engagement Director Molly Gillespie said the fire department and public works crews were on site of the incident, which occurred in a pond near Vapor Bus.

A fire department dispatch said a large amount of fuel was leaking from a sewer into the retention pond.

The area was sealed off with booms to prevent fuel spread, Gillespie said.

The Illinois EPA Emergency Response Team believes the substance is diesel fuel and classified it as a small amount.

An IEPA representative confirmed the booms that were placed in the water were absorbing the run-off appropriately, Gillespie said.
