Over a dozen specialized fire department rescue technicians responded to remove a bariatric man, who was experiencing a medical emergency, through the second story of a Round Lake Beach home Saturday afternoon.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 1:40 p.m. Saturday to the 0-100 block of East Hawthorne Drive in Round Lake Beach.

Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Eric Hair said an ambulance crew responded for a report of a person needing medical attention.

Crews were on the scene for approximately 30 minutes and then activated the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) for the specialized response team (SRT).

Hair said it was determined that crews needed to gain secondary access to the residence to remove the male patient but that it was not a “dire medical emergency.”

Approximately 15 SRT technicians from multiple fire departments responded to the scene to assist with the process.

Hair said the biggest challenge to the operation was safety.

“It’s about keeping the patient safe and making sure all of our personnel are safe,” Hair said.

Fire crews removed a window on the second story of the home. It took approximately an hour to remove the man through the second story.

An ambulance transported him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
