Firefighters assisted a resident in evacuating after a fire broke out in a 24-unit condominium building in Crystal Lake, leaving residents of one unit displaced Monday morning.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 10:14 a.m. Monday to the Virginia Road Condominiums, 651 South Virginia Road in Crystal Lake.
Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department Deputy Chief Rick Kaiser said crews initially received a call for an outside smoke investigation.
Firefighters arrived within five minutes and found smoke and flames on the balcony of a third-floor condo of a 24-unit building.
Firefighters worked to make sure all of the units were evacuated and began extinguishing the fire from the outside of the building, Kaiser said.
One person, who was uninjured, was still inside the condo where the fire occurred. Crews assisted them out of the building.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly and stop it from spreading to the attic, Kaiser said. The unit was deemed uninhabitable.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level, bringing several area fire departments to assist.
Kaiser said fire crews remained on the scene for approximately three hours. The single condo sustained heat, smoke and water damage.
The two occupants of the damaged condo are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
The rest of the condo building still has electricity and ComEd was able to turn off the electricity for only the damaged unit, Kaiser said.
No injuries to firefighters or residents were reported.
The cause of the fire, which resulted in approximately $20,000 in damage, remains under investigation.
