The parents of a 4-year-old boy from Zion say they are “completely shook” and at a loss for words after their child died last week from drowning in a hotel pool in Glenview.

The Glenview Fire Department and Glenview Police Department responded around 9:26 p.m. on April 5 to the Renaissance Chicago Glenview Suites Hotel, 1400 Milwaukee Avenue in Glenview, for a report of a drowning.

A 4-year-old child was reported to be unconscious and not breathing in the hotel pool, according to 911 callers.

The child was pulled from the water and bystanders began performing CPR on the boy.

Officers arrived and took over performing CPR until paramedics arrived.

Brayden Brubaker said he saw the child in the deep end of the pool before he was pulled out of the water.

Jeff Brubaker said he performed chest compressions and rescue breaths on the boy. He could hear water in the child’s lungs.

The boy remained in the hospital for several days and was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Carter E. Patterson, 4, of Zion.

The medical examiner’s office said Patterson’s manner of death was ruled an accident and the cause of death was ruled as drowning.

Melanie Neal, the mother of Patterson, said she and the boy’s father are going through the “hardest thing anyone has ever had to deal with in their life.”

“We recently lost Carter due to a tragic accident we are completely shook and lost for words and appreciate all the love and support we have been receiving,” Neal said.
