A Chicago man has been charged after authorities say he robbed a truck stop convenience store while armed with a gun in Wadsworth and was also connected to other armed robberies.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:40 a.m. on November 6 to Loves Travel Stop, 43100 North Route 41 in Wadsworth, for a report of an armed robbery.
Deputies arrived and learned a suspect had entered the store area of the business and approached the two clerks, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
The suspect displayed a black firearm and demanded money from the clerks.
He stole cash from the register and then fled the area in a black SUV, Covelli said. No one was injured.
The sheriff’s office released surveillance images of the suspect following the incident and detectives launched an investigation.
Evidence technicians responded to the business and processed the scene.
Detectives were able to determine the suspect matched the description of the offender from a truck stop armed robbery in Channahon that occurred in October 2023, Covelli said.
Detectives also learned the suspect matched the description of an offender in a truck stop armed robbery that occurred in November 2023 in Jasper County, Indiana.
Christopher L. Cannon, 43, of Chicago, was stopped by law enforcement in Indiana on November 9.
He was arrested and charged with the armed robbery in Jasper County, Indiana.
Covelli said Cannon was wearing clothing that matched the description of the clothing worn during the Wadsworth armed robbery.
A firearm was recovered from Cannonโs vehicle matching the description of the firearm used in the Wadsworth armed robbery.
Further evidence also linked Cannon to the Wadsworth armed robbery, Covelli said.
Sheriffโs detectives reviewed the facts and circumstances with the Lake County Stateโs Attorneyโs Office, which approved the charge of armed robbery, a Class X felony.
Detectives appeared in front of a judge who issued an arrest warrant for Cannon.
Cannon is currently held in custody in Indiana and was sentenced earlier this month to six years in the Indiana Department of Corrections for the Jasper County robbery.
It is unclear when he will be extradited to Illinois to face his pending charges.
