A neighbor’s prompt 911 call helped firefighters respond and quickly extinguish a fire that damaged the attached garage of a home near Lake Zurich and caused a gas leak.

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded around 11:50 a.m. Tuesday to the 23700 block of North Lakeside Drive in unincorporated Lake Zurich for a report of a structure fire.

Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department Chief David Pilgard said a neighbor spotted the fire and immediately called 911.

Firefighters arrived to find flames showing from the exterior of a garage attached to a residence.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire within minutes of arrival, Pilgard said.

The fire occurred in an area where there were no fire hydrants but firefighters were able to extinguish the fire with the water on their trucks and did not need to haul water to the scene.

No injuries were reported to any firefighters and the resident was not home at the time.

Pilgard said the fire started near the home’s gas meter and damaged the natural gas supply line, causing a gas leak.

The leak occurred before the shut-off valve so firefighters could not stop the leak and Nicor Gas was requested to the scene to mitigate it.

The Wauconda, Long Grove, Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Barrington-Countryside, Arlington Heights and Grayslake fire departments assisted during the incident.

Damage was estimated to be $5,00o to $10,000 and the residence remains habitable, Pilgard said.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined but it is not believed to be suspicious in nature.
