A reckless and intoxicated driver was arrested after he caused a crash that resulted in his truck colliding into a building before he fled the scene in Barrington.

The Barrington Police Department and Barrington Fire Department responded around 9:10 p.m. Saturday to Ela Road and Northwest Highway for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Barrington Police Chief John Burke said a Chevrolet Suburban was traveling on Ela Road attempting to make a left turn onto Route 14.

The Chevrolet Suburban had the green light and was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado in the intersection.

The Chevrolet Silverado had been traveling westbound on Route 14 and went through a red light, Burke said.

The Chevrolet Silverado was traveling erratically just before the crash, according to witnesses.

Burke said the pickup truck continued driving following the impact and made an erratic right-hand turn into the gas station parking lot where it crashed into a building.

The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado got out of his vehicle and left the scene.

He was spotted walking away on Ela Road a block away from the scene when officers caught him, Burke said.

The adult male driver was arrested and transported by ambulance to the hospital where he was treated and released back to the police.

He was determined to be driving under the influence at the time. He was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of a crash and other traffic offenses.

Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles. The driver of the Chevrolet Suburban declined transport to the hospital.

A board-up service was called to the scene for the damaged building, Burke said. The village’s building department was also notified.
