Dog n Suds Drive-In said they are temporarily closed but are working to reopen after a fire caused $120,000 in damage to the popular Grayslake restaurant.

The Grayslake Police Department initially responded at 3:43 a.m. Saturday to Grayslake Dog n Suds Drive-In, 454 Center Street, for a burglar alarm.

Police officers arrived and found smoke coming from the building and felt heat on the windows, Grayslake Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jason Brooks said at the scene.

The Grayslake Fire Protection District was immediately alerted.

Firefighters arrived in minutes and found heavy smoke coming from the chimney and roof area, Brooks said.

Crews deployed a hose line and gained entry to the front of the restaurant to initiate an aggressive interior attack.

Crews located the seat of the fire in the rear of the building and extinguished it.

The restaurant owner responded to the scene after remotely monitoring the building from his phone and learning of the fire, Brooks said.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District assisted the Grayslake Fire Protection District with fire operations at the scene.

An ambulance from the Gurnee Fire Department covered for Grayslake while crews worked the incident.

No one was injured, Brooks said.

Fire officials said that damage is estimated at approximately $120,000.

The fire remains under investigation and the cause of the fire was not immediately available.

Brooks added that the fire was not suspicious in nature.

The building is salvageable and is not a total loss, fire officials said.

The restaurant said in a statement the fire has rendered them non-operational for an undetermined period of time. The establishment will be closed until further notice but will return.

“First and foremost, we would like to thank the community for their outpouring of support during these difficult times,” Grayslake Dog n Suds Drive-In said. “Grayslake, we will be back.”

SERVPRO Northwest Lake County responded Saturday morning with equipment to begin the overhaul process.

BBQ’d Productions Third Lake offered to be the restaurant’s commissary for food trucks upon approval by the Lake County Health Department. The food trucks are not operational yet.

Dog n Suds said they have received requests to allow customers to buy gift cards to support them but their physical cards were destroyed in the fire. The restaurant offers digital gift cards online.

Dog n Suds is a drive-in style hot dog chain with locations in numerous states. The Grayslake location was built in 1964, according to the Grayslake Village Center.
