Landscapers who noticed smoke coming from a house on fire in Highland Park reported the fire, allowing the residents who were inside to escape without injury.
The Highland Park Fire Department responded around 10:15 a.m. Monday to the 2600 block of Summit Avenue for a report of a structure fire.
Highland Park Fire Chief Joe Schrage said landscapers noticed smoke from the ridge of a home.
The residents were alerted to the fire and were able to evacuate from the home.
Firefighters found a fire in the attic of the single-family house, Schrage said. They worked to extinguish the blaze, which was in a difficult area to access.
The fire was contained to the attic but the first floor sustained water damage, Schrage said. Several fire departments responded to the scene to assist.
Investigators determined the fire was accidental.
The homeowner had noticed lights flickering earlier that morning. Schrage said it was discovered the fire was in and around the lights that the homeowner noticed flickering earlier in the day.
The two residents who lived at the home were displaced after the home was deemed uninhabitable.
They are being assisted by the American Red Cross and Highland Park Senior Services.
Fire crews remained on the scene for a couple of hours.
A damage estimate was not immediately available but Schrage said the home is not a total loss.
