An oversized box truck became stuck after striking the historic bridge in Long Grove Friday morning. The bridge has been hit well over 50 times in recent years.

A bystander told Lake and McHenry County Scanner the incident happened just before 10:30 a.m. Friday.

A box truck was traveling eastbound on Robert Parker Coffin Road passing Schaeffer Road in Long Grove.

The truck, which was over the posted height requirement, attempted to cross the Robert Parker Coffin Bridge and struck the bridge’s canopy, resulting in the truck becoming stuck.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and a tow truck responded to the scene.

The bystander said it did not appear that the bridge sustained damage. The tow truck removed the truck from the bridge by around 11:15 a.m.

The bridge, formerly known as the Long Grove Covered Bridge, was renamed in September 2022 to the Robert Parker Coffin Bridge after Robert Parker Coffin, who designed the bridge cover.

The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been struck over 50 times by oversized vehicles since 2018.

In June, a bus became the 50th vehicle to hit the historic bridge after the vehicle scrapped the bridge’s canopy, causing the bus’ roof air conditioning unit to rip off.

The bus did not remain at the scene despite the vehicle’s roof air conditioning unit being ripped off and falling onto the roadway.

A Lake County sheriff’s deputy stopped the bus a quarter-mile away in front of The Chatter Box of Long Grove.

The collision came approximately a week after a box truck and a van struck the same bridge in separate incidents. Both of those crashes were relatively minor.

“There are numerous signs informing drivers of the height restriction and signs prohibiting trucks and busses from using the bridge,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli previously said.
