A man who was reported missing was found dead in Lake Michigan near the Waukegan Harbor and Marina after officers began searching for him Friday morning.
The Waukegan Police Department responded before 7:30 a.m. Friday to the area of the Waukegan Harbor and Marina, 55 South Harbor Place in Waukegan, for a wellness check.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain told Lake and McHenry County Scanner the department went to the area to search for a missing person.
The adult male was reported missing from McHenry after he did not come home, Chastain said.
Officers searched the area and one of the officers eventually spotted the man in the water.
The Waukegan Fire Department was called to the scene and pulled his body from the water.
Chastain said the man was already deceased when officers found him in the water.
Investigators believe he went down to the marina to re-dock his boat in anticipation of bad weather.
He possibly fell into the water and could not get out, Chastain said. The man was described as being a newer boater.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene around 8:40 a.m. and retrieved the body.
An autopsy was performed Friday and the man’s identity is being withheld pending notification to his family.
The death is believed to be an accidental drowning and there were no signs of foul play or suicide, Chastain said.
