Police say an attorney was charged with felonies for allegedly stealing over $60,000 in donation money belonging to a non-profit organization in Riverwoods.
The Riverwoods Police Department received a theft report in April 2023 from the past president of the Illinois House Foundation, a not-for-profit organization.
Riverwoods Police Chief Bruce Dayno said the Illinois House Foundation was dissolved and its assets remained in a bank account in the control of the past president, who is a resident of Riverwoods.
The assets included cash in a bank account in the amount of $60,911.13, which was derived from donations made to support the Illinois House Foundation’s mission, Dayno said.
The past president reported that he made arrangements with Terry T. Campo, 66, of Washington D.C., to transfer the account’s assets to the similar Illinois State Society Foundation based in Washington, D.C.
Campo was the president of the Illinois State Society Foundation in Washington, D.C.
Dayno said a check was made out to Campo which was deposited into Campo’s own account and never transferred to the Illinois State Foundation’s account.
The police department obtained an arrest warrant for Campo in November for the charges of theft over $10,000 and money laundering, both Class 2 felonies, following an investigation by detectives, Dayno said.
Campo surrendered himself on the warrant at the Lake County Jail this month and was released from custody as the charges are non-detainable.
Records show Campo is a registered attorney in Washington D.C. According to his website, he founded The Campo Group upon leaving government service in 1988.
Campo is scheduled to appear in court on May 28 at the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan.
