A 12-year-old child was injured after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle through a crosswalk in Gurnee Monday morning, police said.
The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 7:35 a.m. Monday to Washington Street and Almond Road for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries involving a pedestrian.
The incident occurred at the intersection before the crossing guards were at their designated posts, police officials said.
The 12-year-old child was riding their bicycle northbound on Almond Road and attempted to cross Washington Street.
The bicyclist crossed when the “do not cross” indicator was on the crosswalk, police officials said.
While crossing the street, the child on the bicycle was struck by a Jeep Compass.
Paramedics arrived on the scene to provide aid for minor injuries.
The child was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for further evaluation and treatment.
No citations were issued in the incident.
The Gurnee Police Department said they urge all pedestrians and cyclists to adhere to traffic signals and crosswalk indicators for their safety.
Drivers are reminded to be vigilant, especially during peak hours when children are commuting to school.
