A wildland fire in a marshy area resulted in a large smoke header visible in the Hawthorn Woods area and prompted the response of numerous fire departments Saturday evening.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded around 5 p.m. Saturday to the area of Midlothian Road and Kruger Road in Hawthorn Woods for a report of a brush fire.
A resident in the 50 block of Commons Circle reported seeing a fire behind the home.
Residents and people driving by reported seeing a large smoke header in the area.
Firefighters arrived and found a large fire in a marshy field area with lots of cattails, according to Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Chief David Pilgard.
The fire was fueled by dry conditions and wind, which made it spread quickly.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level for additional help from multiple fire departments.
Pilgard said firefighters were proactive in calling for extra help and they remained on the scene for approximately an hour.
Crews attacked the fire defensively and extinguished the fires when they got close to green areas or roadways, Pilgard said.
No injuries were reported. Approximately two to three acres of the field burned. The cause of the fire is not known.
Midlothian Road was shut down from Old McHenry Road to the Hawthorn Woods Aquatic Center during the incident.
