A pet and a resident were able to escape after a fire broke out at a home, leaving it uninhabitable and damaging a second home in Crystal Lake Monday evening.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 5:14 p.m. Monday to the 1400 block of Blue Heron Drive for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived within seven minutes and found light smoke conditions at the front of the two-story home, according to Crystal Lake Deputy Fire Chief Rick Kaiser.

A neighbor used a garden hose to help slow down the fire before firefighters arrived.

There was one occupant and an animal home at the time of the fire and they were able to exit the house unharmed, Kaiser said.

The fire was deemed under control 35 minutes after the first crew arrived.

Kaiser said the single-family home sustained fire, smoke and water damage and was deemed uninhabitable. Power and gas were disconnected to the property.

An adjacent neighboring house sustained damaged siding from the heat of the fire. There were no injuries to any firefighters or residents.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Huntley, McHenry, Woodstock and Nunda fire districts assisted during the incident.

The damage was estimated to be $45,000, Kaiser said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
