Crews on Monday morning shut down a railroad crossing along a busy section of Route 120 in Grayslake as they begin a two-week-long railroad repair project.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) said the project is at Route 120, also known as Belvidere Road, just west of Route 83 in Grayslake.

The project by the Canadian National Railroad is for railroad crossing repairs.

It requires a full closure, which went into effect at 9 a.m. Monday, IDOT said.

A detour is directing motorists to Hainesville Road, Washington Street and Barron Boulevard.

The work is expected to be complete in nearly two weeks by 7 a.m. on May 11.

Motorists should expect delays and allow extra time for trips through the area, IDOT said.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to detour signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
