A SWAT team arrested a 22-year-old man, who was reported armed with a machete, following an hours-long barricade incident in Highland Park Wednesday morning.
The Highland Park Police Department responded around 10:43 p.m. Tuesday to the 1500 block of McDaniels Avenue in Highland Park for a report of a domestic battery call.
Officers discovered multiple people in the home, who were safely evacuated by police.
The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Diego Rosas, according to city officials.
Prosecutors said an argument began between Rosas and the victim, who have a child together, after the man got home from drinking.
Prosecutors said Rosas punched the woman with a closed fist in her face, arm and side.
A witness saw Rosas slap the woman after family members heard commotion and came downstairs. The victim had minor injuries.
Responding officers determined that Rosas was barricaded inside a room in the home and reportedly armed with a machete, city officials said.
Officers established a safety perimeter and began attempting to negotiate with the suspect.
After some time with no response from Rosas, the Highland Park Police Department requested additional support from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Services Team (NIPAS EST).
NIPAS fortified the safety perimeter while negotiators continued to attempt to make contact with Rosas.
The SWAT team peacefully resolved the incident by taking the suspect into custody around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday.
“The City appreciates the partnership of NIPAS in providing critical mutual aid from neighboring law enforcement agencies,” the city said in a statement.
The evidence and facts of the investigation were reviewed with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and Rosas was charged with two misdemeanor counts of domestic battery.
Rosas was transported to the Lake County Courthouse for a First Appearance Court hearing Wednesday morning.
The state’s attorney’s office filed a petition to detain him.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Rosas held pending a detention hearing, which he scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
