Two people were killed and a third person was critically injured after a dump truck rolled over during a crash involving a car near Wauconda Wednesday morning.
The Wauconda Fire District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded just before 8 a.m. Wednesday to the area of Chardon Road and Fairfield Road in unincorporated Wauconda for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Wauconda Deputy Fire Chief Devin Mueller said fire crewsย arrived to find a two-vehicle crash with heavy damage.
A six-wheel dump truck rolled over onto its side during the collision, Mueller said. The truck was hauling broken asphalt, which spilled onto the roadway.
Two occupants in a small four-door passenger car were heavily trapped, Mueller said. The Round Lake and Grayslake fire departments were called to assist.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said two victims died in the incident and a third victim was critically injured.
Mueller said the two deceased victims were the two trapped occupants in the passenger car. They were pronounced at the scene.
The third victim involved, who was critically injured, was an occupant in the passenger car.
Mueller said that victim’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening and they were able to get out of the car on their own.
The driver of the dump truck was treated at the scene and declined transport to the hospital.
A witness who was behind the truck said the passenger car involved drove out in front of the dump truck and the truck was unable to stop in time.
Traffic on Chardon Road at the intersection has stop signs while traffic on Fairfield Road has the right of way and does not have any traffic control devices.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team was called to the scene to conduct a crash investigation.
Fairfield Road remains shut down from Route 60 to Gilmer Road as of 11:30 a.m. Traffic on Chardon Road is also blocked at Fairfield Road.
The sheriff’s office said they expect to release additional information on the crash early this afternoon.
