Stanislav Zhuravel, 32, of Libertyville.

A fugitive task force arrested a Libertyville man after he was wanted for attempted murder in the stabbing of an elderly man on a public transportation bus in Chicago.

Stanislav Zhuravel, 32, of Libertyville, was arrested in the 200 block of Peterson Road in Libertyville last Tuesday.

Zhuravel was arrested by the Chicago Police Department and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.

The Chicago Police Department announced Zhuravel’s arrest late last week.

The department said Zhuravel was charged with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery to a transit passenger.

Police said they identified Zhuravel as the offender who stabbed a 69-year-old man while on a bus in the 1700 block of South State Street in Chicago.

The incident occurred on January 15 and left the victim suffering from great bodily harm.

CWBChicago reported Zhuravel was on pre-trial release for three criminal cases at the time of the incident.

The victim was slashed in the forehead and suffered multiple stab wounds on his body.

Prosecutors said Zhuravel discarded the knife on the property of a nearby police station and fled the scene, CWBChicago reported.

Zhuravel appeared for a detention hearing last week and a Cook County judge ordered him held in custody pending trial.
