A SWAT team was called and negotiators successfully de-escalated a four-hour standoff where a man in mental crisis armed himself with a gun in Round Lake Wednesday.
The Round Lake Police Department responded around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to the 300 block of Carlisle Court in Round Lake.
Round Lake Police Chief David Prus said officers received a call for an armed suicidal subject.
Officers arrived and found a distressed adult male holding a gun to his head.
He was seated inside his car in the garage of a residence, Prus said. No one else was inside the car with him.
Officers secured the scene and initiated an evacuation of the immediate area.
A request to the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) and their crisis negotiation team was made.
A request was also made for additional officers to respond from nearby police departments.
Prus said crisis negotiators were able to establish a dialog and de-escalate the situation.
The male subject eventually relinquished the firearm and voluntarily exited the residence.
The man was taken into protective custody and transported by ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation, Prus said.
The situation lasted approximately three hours before it came to an end.
The police chief called rumors circulating that the incident was an active shooter “pure speculation.”
No charges have been filed against the man. He did not threaten anyone else at the residence.
“The Round Lake Police Department is committed to the safety of the community and appreciates the cooperation of the local residents directly affected,” Prus said.
