Two people were transported to the hospital and a driver was cited after causing a two-vehicle crash that left one car rolled over on Route 173 in Zion, police said.

The Zion Police Department and Zion Fire Rescue Department responded around 5:30 p.m. Saturday to the area of Route 173 and Gilboa Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Zion Police Department Lt. Derek Zaloudek said a Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 28-year-old Beach Park man, was stopped in the 2100 block of Gilboa Avenue.

The Jeep was facing northbound at the two-way stop sign for the intersection with Route 173.

The Jeep proceeded northbound into the intersection without yielding to uncontrolled eastbound and westbound traffic, Zaloudek said.

The Jeep was struck by an eastbound Toyota Highlander, driven by a 27-year-old Zion man.

Zaloudek said the Jeep rolled over from the impact and caused property damage along the west side of the 2000 block of Gilboa Avenue.

The Toyota Highlander came to rest along Route 173.

The driver of the Jeep and his passenger, a 78-year-old Winthrop Harbor man, were transported to an area hospital, Zaloudek said.

One of the victims was initially reported to be unresponsive at the scene.

Zion Fire Rescue Department Fire Chief Justin Stried said the two victims’ injuries were not as serious as initially reported.

Zaloudek said both victims’ injuries were not life-threatening.

The driver of the Toyota Highlander and his two passengers, a 52-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man, both from Zion, declined medical treatment.

The driver of the Jeep was cited for causing the crash.
