A judge sentenced a Schaumburg man to almost nine years in prison for forcing entry to Kohl’s in Crystal Lake where he stole $80,000 worth of jewelry.
The Crystal Lake Police Department responded around 2 a.m. on December 30, 2022, to Kohl’s, 5420 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake.
Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Richard Neumann said at the time that dispatchers were initially notified of an alarm at the business.
Officers arrived on the scene approximately a minute later.
They found the front glass of the business was broken out and that an offender had entered the business, Neumann said.
The suspect stole a “significant amount of jewelry,” Neumann added.
A criminal complaint said the proceeds stolen were worth approximately $80,000.
Evidence technicians processed the scene while detectives began their investigation into the incident.
John M. Signorile, 49, of Schaumburg, was identified as a suspect and further analysis of forensic evidence was conducted, Neumann said.
Prosecutors said the suspect used a brass punch to break the window.
The object was found inside near a shattered jewelry display case where multiple items of jewelry were missing.
Officers collected fingerprints, photos and DNA samples from the scene.
They also recovered video surveillance footage to identify Signorile and his vehicle, prosecutors said.
The case was reviewed with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, which charged Signorile with burglary, theft over $10,000 and criminal damage to property.
An arrest warrant was obtained for Signorile, who was being held at the time in the Cook County Jail on similar charges in other jurisdictions.
Court records show Signorile entered into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office last week.
He pleaded guilty to one count of burglary, a Class 2 felony, in exchange for his other charges being dismissed.
McHenry County Judge Mark Gerhardt sentenced Signorile to eight years and six months in the Illinois Department of Corrections, which is an extended-term sentence due to his prior criminal history.
