Two police officers were honored for their efforts in de-escalating a situation involving a man armed with a large knife who was in a mental health crisis in Huntley.

Huntley Police Chief Robert Porter recently recognized Officers Harper and Larkin for their “exemplary performance” during a call for service.

The incident involved a man threatening violence to himself and others while experiencing a mental health crisis.

The officers responded to the Huntley home to find a man with a large knife threatening to stab himself, police officials said.

Officers ensured the safety of the other household members and began utilizing their crisis intervention training (CIT) to establish a rapport with the man and convince him to drop the knife.

Once the man learned he would be transported for evaluation by medical personnel, he grabbed a pair of scissors and again threatened to harm himself.

Harper and Larkin were able to subdue the man safely and ensure he received the proper medical care and resources, police officials said.

The man’s wife, who witnessed the entire event, reached out to the shift supervisor to express her gratitude for the professionalism and compassion the officers had for her husband and their family.

“We are very proud of the training we provide to our officers for situations like this, and they way they are able to apply it to these very dynamic and complex situations to ensure the safety of our entire community,” police officials said.
