Police are investigating after two suspects carjacked a man of his sedan at an apartment complex in Round Lake before later fleeing from police.

The Round Lake Police Department responded around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday to the 200 block of West Forest Avenue in Round Lake for a report of a carjacking.

Round Lake Police Chief David Prus said a man had been visiting a significant other at the apartment complex.

He got out of his Nissan Altima to throw some trash away and momentarily left his car running.

The man had the key fob on his person and the car locked when he walked away from it, Prus said.

Two males wearing hoodies approached the car and used a stone or brick in an attempt to break the car’s window to get in.

Prus said the victim heard the loud noise and initially thought it was a gunshot.

The suspects implied to the victim they had a weapon and stole the car before fleeing the area northbound on Macgillis Drive.

The victim was uninjured and it was determined that no shots were fired during the incident, Prus said.

A neighboring police agency located the stolen Nissan and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The stolen vehicle fled from officers.

The Nissan was later located abandoned in Waukegan around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Evidence technicians were sent to process the vehicle, which was later returned to the owner, Prus said, adding that the investigation remains ongoing.
