
A portion of Grand Avenue in Gurnee remains shut down Thursday evening as police investigate a crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist.
The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 5:20 p.m. Thursday to Grand Avenue east of Dilleys Road in Gurnee for a report of a car versus motorcycle crash with injuries.
Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Heraver said a fire/rescue crew happened to be in the area when the call was dispatched, so they were able to arrive on the scene quickly.
Emergency responders found a crash involving a Toyota SUV and a motorcycle in the westbound lanes of Grand Avenue.
The male motorcyclist was down on the ground with serious injuries when crews arrived, Heraver said.
The female driver of the SUV and two teenaged passengers were not injured in the crash, Heraver added.
Paramedics transported the motorcyclist to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to the scene.
As of 8 p.m., westbound Grand Avenue from Lawson Blvd. to Dilleys Road remains shut down while MCAT investigates.
Traffic was heavily congested on Grand Avenue near the entrance to Six Flags Great America due to the closure.
The Gurnee Police Department asked drivers to avoid the area or use alternate routes.
The police department has not yet responded to requests for comment from Lake & McHenry County Scanner.
