A woman received an ankle injury while hiking at Gander Mountain Forest Preserve in unincorporated Antioch late Wednesday evening, authorities said.
Rescue crews from the Antioch Fire Department, the Fox Lake Fire Protection District and the Spring Grove Fire Protection District were dispatched to Gander Mountain in unincorporated Antioch at 6:48 p.m. for a woman in her late 30s who fell at the bottom of a steep slope, said Antioch Fire Department Deputy Chief Jim Cook.
Cook said fire officials did not have a precise location when arriving on scene, so rescuers launched a rescue drone to track the woman down while simultaneously sending a technical slope rescue team out on foot to assist the injured woman.
The woman was discovered alert and conscious at the bottom of a steep hill about a mile off the roadway, Cook said.
Rescue ATV’s from Spring Grove and Antioch were deployed to the location, and rescuers using slope rescue techniques brought the woman up the hill and to a waiting ambulance.
She was transferred to a nearby hospital. Her condition is currently unknown, Cook said.
“Our deepest thanks go out to all assisting rescue departments for their help during this technical rescue,” Cook said.
