One man was killed in a violent one-car crash in Lakewood Friday when the driver lost control of his vehicle while running from police after firing a gun in a Woodstock home, authorities said.

Woodstock Police Department officials said in a news release Friday officers were dispatched to the 200 Block of Douglas Street in Woodstock at 12:39 a.m. for a domestic violence incident where the as-yet unidentified offender discharged a handgun within a residence while multiple innocent family members were present.

No one was shot or injured in the shooting, officials said, and the offender ran from the home and drove away prior to police arrival.

Officers heading to the scene attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle when they saw it, officials said. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.ย 

The offender disregarded police and drove southbound on Route 47, officials said.

Lakewood Police said in a separate news release Friday the driver was travelling at a high rate of speed when lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of routes 47 and 176ย  in Lakewood.

The vehicle veered to the right, went into a grassy area, went airborne and crashed onto Swanson Road, authorities said.

The McHenry County Sheriffโ€™s Office, Lakewood PD, and the Crystal Lake Fire Department arrived at the scene to extricate the driver and attempt life-saving measures.

The driver was transported to Huntley Northwestern Hospital where he later died, Lakewood police said.

A firearm was recovered at the scene matched the description of the weapon used in the residence on Douglas Street earlier, police said.

The Woodstock Police requested the assistance of the McHenry County Major Investigations Assistance Team to assist in the investigation, officials said.
