Detectives are actively investigating several “promising” leads after a four-year-old child was shot in Zion Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The Zion Police Department responded to the area of Galilee Avenue and 22nd Street in Zion at 2:17 p.m. Saturday for shots fired.

Zion Police Lt. Derek Zaloudek said dispatchers received 911 calls of the gunfire.

He added there were also alerts from the city’s gunshot detection systems.

Officers arrived and found a 4-year-old child had been shot, he said.

The Zion Fire & Rescue Department responded and transported the child to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The child’s injuries are non-life-threatening and they are expected to make a full recovery, Zaloudek said.

Police were unable to provide further information on the case because Zaloudek said the investigation is “very active.”

“Our detectives have several very promising leads that they are working on,” Zaloudek said.
