Zion Police have arrested a 17-year-old juvenile in connection with a shooting involving two groups which resulted in a 4-year-old being shot in the head, police said.

Zion Police were dispatched to the 2200 block of Galilee Avenue for multiple reports of gunfire and, upon arrival, a father approached officers saying his 4-year-old daughter had been struck in the head by a bullet, authorities said in a news release Tuesday.

The child was conscious and alert and transported to a local area hospital with minor injuries, police said.

She was released from the hospital later the same day, authorities said.

Evidence recovered at the scene indicated two firearms had been involved in the incident and damage was discovered to nearby vehicles and buildings, police said.

No other gunshot victims were identified, police said.

Police interviewed witnessed and reviewed surveillance video enabling them to presumptively identify two groups of people who exchanged gunfire in close proximity to each other without regard for innocent bystanders, police said.

The as-yet unidentified 17-year-old was located near his apartment complex and taken into custody, police said.

He has been transported to a juvenile detention center on a referral for charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said.

Arrest warrants are pending for several additional suspects, police said.

The incident remains under investigation, police said.
