A man was arrested after he allegedly carjacked a sedan in Chicago and later fled from police near Wadsworth before crashing out and getting arrested in Wisconsin earlier this month.
A white 2024 Toyota Camry was reportedly carjacked in Chicago at around 7:50 p.m. on May 15.
The Chicago Police Department and a helicopter with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) began tracking the carjacked Toyota as it traveled northbound on Route 41 near Gurnee at around 9:10 p.m., according to radio traffic on the Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network (ISPERN).
CBP helicopters began assisting the Chicago Police Department’s carjacking task force in 2022 by tracking stolen vehicles from the sky, CBS Chicago reported.
The Toyota, driven by a person later identified by police as Tyrone Patterson, 25, of Pennsylvania, continued traveling northbound on Route 41 as it merged onto Interstate 94 in Wadsworth.
The Toyota then exited onto Russell Road and traveled westbound, according to police radio traffic.
It then pulled into the Love’s Travel Stop, 43100 Route 41, just south of the Illinois-Wisconsin border, at 9:20 p.m.
The CBP helicopter continued to stealthily track the Toyota as it parked at the travel stop, according to radio traffic.
The helicopter continued to relay information to responding police officers.
Officers began to converge on the parked Toyota at around 9:28 p.m.
The Toyota fled northbound from police towards Wisconsin.
The Pleasant Prairie Police Department and Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department were notified.
Chicago police officers chased the Toyota as it crossed into Wisconsin on 120th Avenue.
Kenosha County sheriff’s deputies, who positioned themselves near the state line, joined the pursuit.
Pleasant Prairie officers positioned themselves near the Uline corporate headquarters in Pleasant Prairie and deployed spike strips.
Dashboard and bodyworn camera provided to Lake and McHenry County Scanner by the Pleasant Prairie Police Department showed multiple spike strip deployments, which successfully deflated the Toyota’s tires.
The Toyota continued fleeing police northbound on 122nd Avenue before it made a U-turn near 104th Street in Pleasant Prairie.
The Toyota fled southbound on 122nd Avenue and eventually crashed out just south of 104th Street, video showed.
Patterson fled on foot from the crashed car.
Officers gave chase and took Patterson into custody nearby along 104th Street at around 9:32 p.m.
Paramedics with Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue Department responded and transported Patterson to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital for treatment after the crash.
Patterson was later discharged from the hospital and booked into the Kenosha County Jail on charges including fleeing police, recklessly endangering safety and resisting an officer, jail records show.
It is unknown at this time what exact charges Patterson is facing in Illinois.
