A Mundelein man is facing decades in prison for possessing and distributing hundreds of images of child pornography from his cell phone over the course of nearly two years, authorities said.
Alexis Chavez, 23, of the 200 block of North Greenview Avenue in Mundelein, is facing 20 class two counts of possession of child pornography with victims ranging from infant to 13 years of age, court records show.
Chavez is also facing a single class X felony count of reproduction of child pornography after police determined evidence existed Chavez shared pornographic images of children through his social media accounts, police said.
Chavez could be sentenced up to 30 years if found guilty at trial of the most serious reproduction charge, court records show.
Court records show Chavez was in possession of child pornography between June 2022 and March 2024.
Mundelein Police were notified by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program (ICAC) that Chavez was in possession of child pornography, Mundelein Police Commander Rick Wilfenger said.
Wilfenger said the investigation involved multiple search warrants of social media accounts which confirmed Chavez was the primary suspect.
Wilfenger said an arrest warrant was issued by the Lake County States Attorney’s Office and Chavez was taken into custody at a Mundelein business without incident Friday, May 24.
Through a search warrant, Chavez’s cellular phone was seized and a forensic analysis of the phone showing he was in possession of hundreds of images containing child pornography with victims ranging from infant to 13 years of age, Wilfenger said.
Wilfenger said there is no evidence that Chavez was involved in any illegal physical interactions with any children.
Chavez appeared briefly in front of Lake County Associate Judge Ari Fisz Saturday where he was ordered held in Lake County jail pending a detention hearing in front of Lake County Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak Tuesday afternoon.
